Reply To: I love Deringer
Deringer’s great. When writing her I tried to focus on making her a relatable if rough-and-tumble character. She starts off both trying to escape her mundane life in NY and solve what she feels is a conspiracy within NY politics that involves the mayor and corrupt police. Her mafia informant gives her the details of the tournament and before you know it she’s in over her head. The match with Eviscerator was a great introduction to the brutality of the series but also interestingly it was a rare moment where Eviscerator stays his hand. Makes you wonder why he didn’t kill Deringer but killed Yamoja and others.
Over the proceeding books, you come to realize Eviscerator has a kind of code, and what probably saved Deringer was him realizing she’s something of a kindred spirit.
